GB EORI Number for UK Imports: What Importers Need to Know

A GB EORI number (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) is mandatory for almost all commercial imports into the United Kingdom. Without it, HMRC will not release your cargo at the border.
What Is an EORI Number?
An EORI is a unique ID used by HMRC and border authorities to track importers and exporters. UK EORI numbers start with GB followed by 12 digits (often your VAT number plus 000).
Who Needs a GB EORI?
- UK businesses importing goods from China
- Non-UK businesses shipping to the UK (need a GB EORI or an appointed importer of record)
- Anyone making customs declarations for commercial cargo
With TY Freight DDP service to the UK, we arrange import compliance including EORI-related requirements for eligible shipments — you do not need to navigate HMRC registration alone.
How to Register for a GB EORI
UK businesses register free at HMRC online. Non-UK businesses can also apply for a GB EORI if they import directly. Processing typically takes a few working days. Read our full UK customs clearance guide for the complete import process.
